Another Era for Planosaurus!
Bandai are going back through the ages again and producing an additional nine kits to add to the already colourful array of dinosaur kits.
We’ve already seen some of the iconic “TV stars” such as the T‑Rex and Triceratops. Now Bandai have ventured into some of the lesser‑known species. Lesser‑known in the sense that I hadn’t heard of some of these myself, but they’re cool nonetheless.
In the new lineup there is Archelon, the largest turtle ever discovered, apparently weighing over 2,000 kg.
Next is the Steller’s Sea Cow. This marine mammal resembles a modern manatee but grew to over 10 metres long and only went extinct in 1768.
The Iguanodon also joins the range, a dinosaur that has appeared in recent films and is renowned for standing upright and having those big thumb spikes.
Another addition is a nod to a historical reconstruction: the Mosasaurus, depicted as it was imagined in 1899 with a mane of scales. You may recognise it from the “we need more teeth” scene in Jurassic World.
Next up is the Pachyrhinosaurus, try saying that five times quickly. Imagine a Triceratops with the top two horns missing and you’re close. At around 8 metres long and 4,000 kg, it’s about the size of a minibus.
There are also two re‑imagined dinosaurs: the Tyrannosaurus and Spinosaurus as they were believed to look in 1915. Both are fascinating throwbacks to early palaeontological interpretations.
And finally, two themed versions of the Tyrannosaurus: Rainforest and Snowfall. I’m struggling to find much information on real‑world equivalents of these, but they certainly look cool!
So, if you fancy yourself an upcoming David Attenborough or want a fun stepping stone into palaeontology, dig into these awesome model kits.
