MG 1/100 RX-78-4 Gundam Unit 4

The RX-78-4 Gundam Unit 4 comes from the manga Mobile Suit Gundam Side Story: Space, At the End of the Flash, and this MG release gives the suit a thorough and well-considered treatment. The shoulder thrusters and propellant tanks are removable, letting you switch between the standard configuration and the enhanced loadout depending on the pose or display you're going for. The arm beam guns and the thrusters at the rear of the shins are also detachable, with the connection points featuring detailed mechanical moulding underneath. It's one of those kits where the engineering rewards a bit of exploration.

Articulation has been thought through carefully. The shoulder joints use pull-out construction, which opens up a much more natural range when posing the kit with both arms extended or holding weapons in a two-handed grip. The ankle joints are double-structured, giving noticeably better ground contact when the legs are spread wide for dynamic stances. The backpack exterior lifts away entirely to reveal fully reproduced internal mechanical detail beneath, which is a solid touch for display builders who want to show a bit of the kit's inner workings.

The weapon loadout is well suited to the suit's character: a mega launcher with its energy cable reproduced in lead wire, a beam rifle, two beam sabers, and a foldable shield. The lead wire on the mega launcher is one of those small details that reads well in photos and in person alike.
